A Seminar: Meaning and Metaphor in the Statue of Liberty
Description
Join Abigail DeVille whose newly-commissioned sculpture "Light of Freedom" was inspired by the arm and torch of the Statue of Liberty which were on view in Madison Square Park from 1876 to 1882, and Professor Edward Berenson, whose scholarship on the Statue of Liberty transforms the interpretation of the colossal monument.
Brooke Kamin Rapaport, Deputy Director and Martin Friedman Chief Curator, will introduce the program.

Her work focuses on gentrification, lost regional histories, community transformation and racism. She has exhibited at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; Institute of Contemporary Art, LA; New Museum; and the Stedelijk. DeVille received a BFA from Fashion Institute of Technology, an MFA from Yale University, and attended Skowhegan School. Residencies include International Studio and Curatorial Program, Studio Museum in Harlem, The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study Fellowship, Rauschenberg Foundation and American Academy in Rome. She's received awards from Joan Mitchell Foundation, Van Lier Fund of New York Community Trust, Creative Capital, United States Artists and Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. DeVille is on faculty at MICA in Baltimore and Yale School of Art. She was born in New York and works in the Bronx. Edward Berenson Edward Berenson is professor and chair of the history department at NYU. He is a cultural historian specializing in the history of modern France and its empire, with additional interests in the history of Britain, the British Empire, and the United States. He is the author, most recently, of "The Statue of Liberty. A Transatlantic Story" (2012), "Europe in the Modern World" (2016 and 2020), and "The Accusation: Blood Libel in an American Town" (2019). Berenson has won distinguished teaching awards from UCLA and the American Historical Association and, in 2006, was decorated by the French government as Chevalier dans l’ordre du Mérit. From 2015 to 2019, he served as Senior Fellow at the National September 11 Memorial Museum charged with directing the Museum’s Mellon-funded postdoctoral fellowship program.
